Following the example of the stations of Ghent-St-Pierre, Liège and Louvain, SNCB and Eurogare are continuing the profound redevelopment of the major regional stations of the Belgian network with that of the City of Mons.

The main feature of the Mons station is a footbridge covering all the platforms and linking the centre of the city of Mons and the Grands Prés district (administrative city, university, shopping centre, exhibition hall, cinema, etc.). This footbridge will be a station in its own right, taking over the usual services of SNCB but also of the shops.

Mons station will be multimodal by merging the bus station with the first platform of the railway station, a link with the motorway and more than 800 underground parking spaces. The design of the station refers to the folklore of the City of Mons and its dragon.

In this major project, Belgorail acts as a notified body, designated body and independent safety evaluator. One of the main challenges for Belgorail is to evaluate and confirm that the bridge station is not an obstacle to ensure perfect visibility of signals for drivers.
