Project's description

HS2 is a new high-speed line (maximum line speed for the track system design shall be 360km/h) which will be constructed in two phases: Phase 1, being 160 km long, will run from London Euston to the West Midlands, where it will connect with the existing West Coast Main Line, and Phase 2 from Birmingham to Manchester and Leeds. It includes high speed rail provision at London Euston station and new stations at Old Oak Common, Birmingham Interchange and Birmingham Curzon Street, Manchester and Leeds. Moreover, it includes a number of depot sites including Washwood Heath Rolling Stock Maintenance Depot and the Calvert Infrastructure Maintenance Depot.

The civil engineering structures along the route will comprise tunnels, viaducts, bridges, etc. The rolling stock, which will be permitted to run on HS2, will be designed for high speed operation on electrified railway lines with a nominal voltage of 25 kV 50 Hz.

The new railway will be equipped with an autotransformer Type 25-0-25kV traction power system, with power delivered to the vehicles via the overhead catenary system (OCS). The signalling system technology will be European Train Control System (ETCS) level 2 or hybrid level 3 (no wayside signals).

Telecommunication systems for the radio-transmission of train control and signalling, as well as for emergency and public services, will be provided. The project shall be fully integrated with the existing rail network.
