The Saudi Railways Organization (SRO) operates a railway network comprising 1,380 kilometers of track, extending from King Abdul Aziz Port in Dammam and the City of Dammam itself (on the East coast of the Kingdom) to Riyadh, passing by Abqaiq, Hofuf, Haradh, Al-Tawdhihiyah and Al-Kharj. In addition, some auxiliary lines, branches from the SRO’s main lines, link some industrial and agricultural areas and military sites with export ports and residential areas. In order to shorten the time trip between Dammam and Riyadh and increase the network’s capacity, SRO undertook a wide program of modernization and upgrading including the installation of modern signalling system (ETCS level 1) and telecommunication GSM-R system, procurement of 8 new DMU (CAF) push-pull trains designated for a maximum speed of 200km/h, upgrading the line from Dammam to Hofuf for the maximum speed of 160 km/h , upgrading the line from Hofuf to Riyadh for the maximum speed of 200 km/h and operational speed of 180km/, doubling the line between Hofuf and Riyadh, diverging the line outside Hofuf city from km 114+700 to km 163+300, protecting the line from intrusions by steel wire fence, hiring consultant to develop Safety Management System (SMS) and new operating plan when starting the new passenger services.
SCOPE OF WORK
In this context, CERTIFER was involved as an Independent Competent Person (ICP) to review the SRO’s SMS and perform the independent certification of design and safety verification by using documentary evidence supplied by SRO for civil works and other railway infrastructure, control systems, equipment, rolling stock, etc. This verification included Specification, Design, Test and acceptance and Maintainability.
