Sono stati implementati standard ampiamente riconosciuti per definire un contesto per lo sviluppo e l'utilizzo di sistemi complessi applicati alla ferrovia.

La norma EN 50126 definisce un processo standardizzato di sviluppo del prodotto che può essere applicato a qualsiasi stakeholder che agisce nel settore ferroviario. Le norme EN 50128 e EN 50129 riguardano rispettivamente aspetti software e hardware. Ciascuno di questi standard definisce i Livelli di Integrità di Sicurezza (SIL) che consentono di sviluppare tali prodotti in piena conformità alle aspettative di sicurezza.

L'obiettivo principale di questa formazione è quello di dare ai partecipanti una visione globale di quelle norme dedicate al settore ferroviario, nonché uno sguardo ai metodi e alle tecniche industriali per sviluppare prodotti ferroviari in base ai principi di affidabilità.
