On the 3rd of September 2008 the states Denmark and Germany signed the state treaty on the fixed link across the Fehmarn Belt. On the 15th of April 2009, the treaty was ratified by the Danish Parliament in the adoption of the Act on Project Planning of the Fixed Link across the Fehmarn Belt with hinterland connections in Denmark.
The Fehmarn Belt link will close a gap in the infrastructure between Scandinavia and continental Europe and will entail a higher level of flexibility and considerable time savings for both passenger transport and transport of goods, which is expected to increase significantly towards 2025.
Improved connections between Scandinavia and Central Europe are of great importance as this strengthens traffic connections to the major Danish export markets. The Fehmarn Belt fixed link will similarly become a significant upgrade of both national and international transport corridors benefiting societal development and economic growth in Denmark.
The mission’s objective is to assess the upgrading of the railway line connecting Ringsted and the future fixed link across the Fehmarn Belt.
The project includes the construction of an additional track alongside the existing track between Vordingborg and a location south of Holeby, where the line connects to the fixed link across Fehmarn Belt.
This upgrading process especially concerns the upgrade to 200 km/h for passenger trains, from the current 160 km/h (from Ringsted to Vordingborg) and 120 km/h (from Vordingborg to RødbyFærge).
Banedanmark plans implementing a lot of other features, which are (non-exhaustive list):
- Construction and modification of new road and rail bridges including a 4000-meter bridge and a bascule bridge;
- Construction of new tracks;
- Construction of new rails;
- Renewal of tracks;
- Temporary tracks;
Further activities are also planned, such as ballast cleaning, track renewal and replacement of points.
The upgraded railway line will also provide an enhanced capacity, as follow:
- 40 passenger trains each day;
- 78 freight trains each day.
ISA mission according to CSM regulation 402/2013 and NoBo mission according to TSI Infrastructure, Persons with Reduced Mobility and Energy.
Assessment of two bridges over the sea and more than 50 common bridges all over the line.
